THE KOKODA STORY program takes you back in time to see, understand and appreciate the war fought by the brave Japanese and Australian soldiers along the Kokoda Trek in the Owen Stanley Ranges. It guides onto the battle field, shows you the location of camp sites, care centers as well as war relics and human remains of the casualties of the Kokoda Battles.
You hear the KOKODA STORY as you walk the Campaign Trek and rest in the tranquil STORYHOUSE on the site of a care-center at Kovelo near the Kokoda District Headquarters.
At the same time, you can enjoy food harvesting in the gardens, participate in the initiation, marriage, and thematic celebrations.
ON THE KOKODA TREK in the Owen Stanley Rangers, you will feel the challenge of the treacherous trail which was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of World War II.
Several nights along the trek will reinforce the Kokoda Story. You will guided and assisted by direct descendents of the original Fuzzy Wazzy Angles of WWII. These new generation Fuzzy Wazzy Angles are experienced guides and potters. You have a choice of either trekking from Sogeri to Kokoda or Kokoda to Sogeri. While trekking on the trail of the gallant soldiers of WWII, trekkers can also enjoy the flora and fauna and experience the wilderness. The experienced guides and potters will facilitate the trekking just like the Fuzzy Wazzy Angles of WWII to ensure you enjoy the experience.
AT THE STORYHOUSE
Located on a Japanese care-center at Kovelo, the first village along the Kokoda trek from KOKODA District Administration center, you will hear an unbiased account of the Kokoda Campaign told by the villages who are descendents of eyewitnesses, carriers and aids during the war.Trekkers can choose to rest here after or before trekking and listening to the story told by the elders of Kokoda Trek
Tourists who choose to visit significant sites at the battle-field including burial sites, campsites and other areas containing relics and remains can check in at the storyhouse to stay for as long as they wish Nature lovers can also enjoy bush-walking, bird-watching, butterfly and orchid viewing in the area. Cultural enthusiasts will be amazed by the tribal culture of food harvesting, ceremonies and rituals and will be invited to participate. The village will come alive at night with traditional songs, music and dancing. Those bird lovers can watch bird spices and those fond of fishing can catch fish from the ponds.
The soryhouse is furnished with beds and three meals of fresh juicy fruits and organically grown garden vegetables of choice.
